I love everything about being at the beach: Exploring the shoreline, surfing, swimming, kayaking, snorkeling or just playing in the waves. Every trip to the beach can be different and understanding the waves and the weather will keep you safe no matter what you are doing. Join me in the Ocean Today Wave Safe series as we travel the country’s coasts to teach you how to protect yourself and others.

When you visit the beach you need to know about the hazards you may face. But staying aware and alert is what will keep you safe in the dynamic conditions on every beach. To stay safe you need to stay aware of the weather, the ocean, and what is going on around you. Storms far out at sea can create dangerous waves and currents at the beach, even on a sunny day! Even small waves can hit you with the force of a car! Getting knocked down or pinned to the sand can cause serious injury. Always remember: if you want to stay safe at the beach, respect the power of the ocean!
